Journey into Public Service
• Immigrated from Hong Kong in 1988 and began working as a mental health consultant in Richmond.
• Ran for School Trustee in 1999 to support new immigrant families in understanding the education system.
• Became Richmond’s first bilingual (English and Chinese) School Trustee, advocating for cultural interpreters and developing the Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program.
Key Initiatives and Achievements
• Elected as a Richmond City Councillor since 2011, championing initiatives for inclusivity, safety, and sustainability.
Cultural Harmony and Anti-Racism Efforts
• Advocated for a zero-tolerance policy on racism, especially in response to increased hate crimes during COVID-19.
• Established protocols for addressing incidents of racism, promoting a safer and more inclusive Richmond.
Public Safety Initiatives
• Strong advocate for community safety and anti-drug efforts.
• Opposed the legalization of cannabis; in 2017, presented at a Senate committee hearing to share concerns and recommendations.
• Engaged with the Minister of Public Safety to implement stricter cannabis regulations, leading to Richmond’s decision to ban cannabis retail stores.
• Recently opposed a proposed supervised consumption site in Richmond’s city center, raising community awareness and successfully influencing a decision to halt the plan.
International Trade and Economic Promotion
• Actively promoted Richmond’s international trade ties, supporting initiatives to enhance the local economy and establish new partnerships abroad.
• Joined and led government trade missions to Asian countries, including China and Vietnam, to foster connections supporting Richmond’s diverse business community.
• Instrumental in establishing new direct flight routes between Vancouver and two major Chinese cities, Xiamen and Zhengzhou, strengthening Richmond’s position as a hub for international commerce and tourism.
Environmental Sustainability Initiatives
• Advanced Richmond’s circular economy initiatives,
contributing to environmental sustainability in the city.
